GENERAL

The Rake Caddie has been designed to provide years of service for the golf course. However, like any other item the Rake Caddies will require some maintenance attention throughout the year to keep them in working order. We have spent seven years designing the product to withstand the abuse it might receive from golfers, maintenance crews and also from Mother Nature.

While the Rake Caddie will require periodic maintenance, as discussed in other sections of the website, it was designed to save maintenance hours associated with moving, repairing, and replacing bunker rakes. After installing the Rake Caddie the superintendents are saving hours a day by not moving rakes while mowing and maintaining their sand traps.

Some maintenance effort is required:

Trimming:

  • Much like sprinkler heads on the course, the Rake Caddies will require periodic trimming. The frequency of the trimming will depend upon the type and growth rate of grass on each individual course.
  • If the unit is not trimmed periodically the lid will not open fully and the rake will catch on the lid and not rise out of the unit. This is caused because the lid hits the turf on the rear of the unit and remains partially closed.
  • In addition, the grass at the front of the unit could build up and keep the lid slightly open, when in the closed position, thus letting water and debris inside the unit.
  • We have found that trimming around the Rake Caddie once every 4 to 8 weeks will be sufficient. The trimming can be done with a:
    1. turf knife,
    2. ‘Weed-Eater’ type tool, or
    3. trimming tool designed especially for the rake caddie.
  • If you have an interest in or questions about the trimming tool, please contact us. If you use a ‘Weed-Eater’ it may cause a more worn look on the lids over time.

Water Tightness

  • The Rake Caddie has been engineered to keep water out of the unit, thus keeping the rake handle dry and clean. However, we have also found that as watering patterns around a golf course change, the amount of water that may collect in the bottom of the hole will change. If the unit was installed in an area that was dry then the waterproof plug was not inserted in the bottom of the pipe. It might become necessary, if water begins to collect in the bottom of the hole, to remove the unit and install the plug to keep ground water from entering the bottom of the unit.
  • In addition, we have found in a few instances, where a water tight cap has been installed in the bottom of the unit, that a malfunctioning sprinkler or excessive hand watering over and around the Rake Caddie, will cause the hole to fill and the unit to flood with water. If this happens, simply pull the Rake Caddie out of the sleeve and dump the water out of the unit. Then simply return the Rake Caddie in the sleeve and seat properly in the hole cut out for the head.

Pull Rake Out Of Sleeve

Lid

  • The lid has been constructed so that maintenance equipment can be used on and around the Rake Caddie. However, the lid can be punctured especially by equipment used on courses that over seed. It is easy to replace the lid if it is punctured. Simply pull out the two hinges put on a new lid and put back in the hinges. Make sure that the spring and housing fit properly together.

Pull Out The Hinges

Rake

  • The rake will last many years if when not in use it is retained in the Rake Caddie. The sun, elements and maintenance and golf course equipment will not destroy the rake.
  • It is possible to break off the teeth on the rake if pounded on a very hard surface. If this happens, obtain a new rake head, drill out the rivet, insert the handle into the new rake head and insert a new rivet into the rake head and handle.

Drill Out The Rivet

Sand in the Pan

  • Sand might accumulate in the pan and not flow through the drainage holes. If this happens, pull the unit out of the ground and clean out the sand.

Settling

  • We have found in a few cases, that within the first year after installation, the Rake Caddies will ‘settle’ up to an inch. The Caddies are designed to function best when the lid is just at ground level. If this natural settling occurs, it will become more difficult to properly use the Rake Caddies. If this occurs on your course, please contact us for a simple solution.

Please contact us with any questions. As you have seen, we do offer a full warranty based on manufacturers defects. If the Rake Caddies are not maintained as explained above, they eventually will malfunction and will not be covered under the warranty. We hope that like many other courses around the country, you will see the benefits in having the Rake Caddie installed on your course.
